Thunder Unable to Overcome Slow Start in Loss to Alma

ALMA, Mich. -- The Trine women's soccer team was unable to overcome a slow start at Alma as the Thunder fell to the Scots 4-2 in MIAA-action Wednesday afternoon at Scotland Yard.

Alma scored three times in the first 20:21 to provide all the scoring the Scots would need. Mackenzie Hoffman (Jamestown, Ind. / Western Boone) notched her first two-goal effort to lead Trine, while Carly Osinksi (Noblesville, Ind. / Guerin Catholic) assisted on both tallies. Alma was led by Megan Kalanik's two goals. The Thunder fell to 2-6-2 overall, 2-6 in MIAA play. The Scots improved to 4-3-2 overall, 3-2-2 in conference matches.

Kalanik scored the first goal of the match unassisted at the 11:16 mark. She added her second tally five minutes later, with Whitnee Foote and Jessica Burg picking up the assists. Burg's goal off a pass from Lexi Moyer made the score 3-0 just over 20 minutes into the contest.

Hoffman scored the first of her goals to cut the score to 3-1 going into the half. The freshman added her second goal from Osinski with 15 minutes to play in the second half. The performance was Hoffman's first collegiate multi-goal effort, and the second such effort by a Thunder freshman this year. Osinski became the first Trine player to pick up two assists in a match since 2013. 

Foote scored Alma's final goes just over 10 minutes into the second half to make the score 4-1. Kayla Linstruth notched the assist. 

The Thunder open the second half of the MIAA season Tuesday, Oct. 4 at Calvin. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
