ANGOLA, IND. – The Trine University women's soccer team defeated Earlham College today by a score of 2-0. Sophomore Morgan Sanderson (Leo/Leo) would be a major part of the Thunder's goals.
The match started as a defensive struggle with both teams recording decent chances. In the 25th minute it looked like another chance for Trine would be ruined by the Quakers' defense. But Sanderson gained control of the loose ball and made a short pass to sophomore Marisa Robinett (Auburn/DeKalb) who fired a long shot over the goalkeeper. It was Robinett's first of the season and would be the lone goal of the first half, as Trine entered halftime with a 1-0 lead.
The seond half would begin in much the same way as the first, with both teams finding themselves stymied by the defenses. Senior goalkeeper Kristina Veljovic (Valparaiso/Valparaiso) was a big part of that defense as she was forced to make six saves on the night, one of which was a spectacular diving save that prevented Earlham from tieing the game in the early second half.
In the 75th minute, Sanderson would once again make something despite good defense by the Quakers. Sanderson took a pass just outside the goalie box and worked her way around two defenders before putting it past the goalkeeper. The goal was Sanderson's fourth of the season, a team high.
Trine would fend off the Earlham attack for the rest of the game to finish with a 2-0 win. With the win the team improves to 3-0 on the season.
The Thunder take the pitch again on Thursday, September 7, at 7:00 p.m. when they travel to Anderson University. The game will feature Live Video and Stats, links for both can be found HERE.
