Thunder Come Back to Beat Belles

ANGOLA, IND. – The Trine women's soccer team came back to win their match against Saint Mary's College by the score of 2-1.

The Belles would strike first in the game when they were awarded a penalty kick in the 17th minute. McKenna O'Shea was able to capitalize for her seventh goal of the season, giving the Belles a 1-0 lead.

The goal seemed to galvanize the Thunder as they spent a good majority of the rest of the game in the offensive zone. They would eventually out-shoot Saint Mary's 21-7 in the game. Despite the offensive pressure, the Thunder could not find the back of the goal in the first half and entered the intermission still without a goal.

That changed in the 58th minute when Trine was awarded their own penalty kick. Senior Erica Hoot (Fort Wayne/Carroll) took the attempt and put it over the goalkeeper's head, for her second goal of the season.

Both teams would remain scoreless for the next thirty minutes of the game and it began to look like extra time would be needed to decide the contest. But then sophomore Morgan Sanderson (Leo/Leo) broke through the defense and was able to pass the ball away just before being tackled in the box. Senior Gigi Jarratt (Valparaiso/Valparaiso) took full advantages of the pass and put it in the back of the net for the deciding goal of the contest, and her first of the season.

With the win, Trine improves to 5-5 overall and 1-5 in the MIAA. They will next compete when they travel to Alma College on Tuesday, Sept. 26 for a 4:00 p.m. match.
