Thunder Score Late Goal to Defeat Belles

NOTRE DAME, IND. -- The Trine women's soccer team defeated St. Mary's College tonight by the score of 1-0.

The match was a defensive struggle for most of its ninety minutes with both teams holding each other off the board until the last six minutes of the game. The difference between the two teams in the contest was the strength of their offensive attack.

Senior goalkeeper Kristina Veljovic (Valparaiso/Valparaiso) was called upon to only make three saves in the match, while the Trine offense forced the opposition to face 11 shots on goal.

In the 85th minute of the match, the Thunder's eleventh shot on goal, taken by sophomore Morgan Sanderson (Leo/Leo), would find the back of the net. Sanderson took a pass from fellow sophomore Marisa Robinett (Auburn/DeKalb) and cut it through the defense putting her shot inside the left post and past the goalkeeper.

The goal gave the Thunder the 1-0 victory in the match for their sixth victory of the season. With the victory, this season becomes the winningest in Trine women's soccer's NCAA Division III history.

The Thunder will next compete in their final home event of the season on Saturday, Oct. 28 when they take on Alma College at noon.
