Thunder Draw in First MIAA Contest

ALMA, Mich. -- The Trine University women's soccer team struck first but settled for a draw with host Alma College by the score of 1-1.

Both teams had opportunities in the first half, but neither could capitalize entering the intermission tied at zero.

Once again freshman Jillian Rejcyzk (Wauconda, Ill. / Wauconda) got the start for the Thunder in goal and once again she played well. She finished the contest with fives saves allowing just the one goal.

Trine broke the stalemate first when junior Morgan Sanderson (Leo / Leo) scored the go-ahead goal in the 51st minute of the match. The goal is her third of the season.

The Thunder held the 1-0 lead for just over 30 minutes, but the Scots tallied the equalizer in the 82nd minute of the contest. The teams were unable to break the stalemate again throughout the rest of regulation and two overtime periods, finishing the match in a 1-1 draw.

With the tie, Trine starts Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) competition with a 0-0-1 record and a 3-6-1 overall record. The team will continue their season by hosting Albion College on Saturday, Sept. 29 for a 4 p.m. match.
