ANGOLA, Ind. -- The Trine University women's soccer team ran into a hot goalkeeper, dropping their match to Albion College by the score of 2-0.
The Thunder got the first quality chance to score in the contest. In the 13th minute, junior Marisa Robinett (Auburn / DeKalb) placed a perfect ball behind the Briton defense from midfield, finding her fellow junior Kristen Reece (Indianapolis / Roncalli) who streaked into the right side of the box. Reece put a shot toward the center of goal from the far right side but had her goal stolen by the flailing hand of the Albion keeper. Even after the deflection the shot looked like it had a chance but went just wide of the left post.
Eight minutes later the Britons broke the stalemate, placing a ball out of reach of freshman goalkeeper Jillian Rejczyk (Wauconda, Ill. / Wauconda), just barely missing the crossbar. The goal gave Albion the 1-0 lead which they would carry into halftime.
In the 61st minute of the contest Trine sophomore Courtney Reece (Indianapolis / Roncalli) just missed out on knotting up the contest at one. Reece received the ball at the top of the box and, rather than passing to the wings, took a long hard shot at the goal. The shot soared just below the crossbar where once again the Briton keeper made a spectacular play, jumping up to deflect the ball downward. The ball landed just outside of the line and stayed there long enough for the keeper to scramble back and cover it.
Albion immediately responded to the near miss, driving down the field and breaking through the Thunder defense for their own opportunity. A trailing Briton attacker received a pass inside a box and shot it through a charging Rejczyk's grip for their second goal of the contest. Albion would hold on to the 2-0 lead and head home with a victory.
Despite giving up the two goals, Rejczyk played well in net. She finished the match with ten saves, at least half of which came off of very well-placed shots.
Trine falls to 3-7-1 overall and 0-1-1 in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) while Albion improves to 5-5-1 and 2-0 in the conference.
The Thunder will look to pick up their first MIAA victory when they travel to face Kalamazoo College on Tuesday, Oct. 2 in a 7 p.m. contest.
