Thunder Stun Visiting Knights

ANGOLA, Ind. -- An early goal was all the Trine University women's soccer team needed to take down visiting Calvin College on Shive Field in Zollner Stadium by the score 1-0.

The Thunder got things started in just the 41st second of the competition by taking advantage of an early foul by the visiting Knights. Junior Marisa Robinett (Auburn / DeKalb) took the free kick for Trine and placed it perfectly inside the box giving two of her teammates a chance for the goal. Sophomore Courtney Reece (Indianapolis / Roncalli) took that opportunity and put the ball just passed the waiting Calvin keeper. The goal was her second of the year and gave the Thunder the 1-0 win.

Trine almost added to their lead in the 66th minute of the contest when freshman Mia Schlueter (Fort Wayne / Carrol) moved behind the Calvin defense and put a low shot in the left corner of the goal. The Knights' keeper made a diving save to stop the attempt.

For the entirety of the match, the Thunder played tough defense and held the Knights off the board.

Anchoring the defensive effort was freshman goalkeeper Jillian Rejczyk (Wauconda, Ill. / Wauconda) who finished the day with the shutout and seven crucial saves. Beyond the saves, she took away even more Calvin chances with aggressive play, especially in the final ten minutes of the second half.

Calvin falls to 7-4-2 and 2-2-1 in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) following the loss.

Trine improves to 4-10-1 overall and 1-4-1 in the MIAA. The victory is Trine's first against Calvin.

The Thunder will continue their season when they host Adrian College on Saturday, October 20. The match is set to start at noon.
