Women's Soccer Draws with Host Lions

CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Trine University women's soccer team continued their weekend road trip with a match against Mount St. Joseph University and will return home with a tie as the double-overtime game ended in a 1-1 draw.

The Thunder found themselves under heavy offensive pressure during the first half as the Lions took nine shots with six coming on goal. Freshman goalkeeper Carmen Sweigard (South Lyon, Mich. / South Lyon) performed well in her first start holding off the barrage for the most part.

The lone blemish on her night came in the 26th minute of the contest when Mount St. Joseph was awarded a penalty kick and converted on it to take the 1-0 lead.

Trine would find offense of their own in the first half with six shots three coming on goal. But they were unable to convert and would enter the intermission trailing.

The Lions' lead would not last long into the second half as the Thunder were awarded their own penalty kick. Senior Marisa Robinett (Auburn, Ind. / DeKalb) took the attempt and converted for the Thunder, notching her first goal of the season to draw even with the opposition.

Trine would keep up the pressure on Mount St. Joseph, coming away with two more shots than the Lions. But neither team was able to break the stalemate and the teams headed to overtime.

Through both extra periods, the Thunder outshot the Lions recording four shots on goal to the oppositions none, but the game would end in a 1-1 draw.

Senior Morgan Sanderson (Leo, Ind. / Leo) led the way for Trine with three shots on goal in the contest. Sweigard ended the contest with seven saves.

Trine finishes their first weekend of competition with a 1-0-1 record. They will take the pitch again when they travel to face Buffalo State University on Friday, Sept. 6. The contest is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
