Women's Soccer Kicks Out Spartans

ANGOLA, Ind. -- The Trine University women's soccer team came away with the lone goal of the contest in the second half to take a 1-0 victory over visiting Manchester University.

While both teams would enter the intermission scoreless, the Thunder had three near misses in the first half. Twice sophomore Kayla Dennewitz (Westerville, Ohio / Westerville Central) placed a well-struck ball on goal but missed by just a hair rebounding off the crossbar. The second time the rebound went straight down onto the goal line just barely missing out on a goal.

Freshman Veronica Ocampo (Elkhart, Ind. / Elkhart Memorial) came away with a near miss of her own striking the left post on her hard-hit shot.

Trine controlled the game from start to finish, allowing just four shots while racking up 27 in the game. 13 of those shots came on goal for the Thunder, while the Spartans only forced one save from sophomore goalkeeper Ahdrin Bordner (Delaware, Ohio / Rutherford B. Hayes).

The Thunder finally broke the tie in the 52nd minute of the contest. Senior Morgan Sanderson (Leo, Ind. / Leo) started the play and junior Alyssa Siracuse (Buffalo, N.Y. / Mount Mercy Academy) finished it off for her first goal of the season.

Trine would continue to pressure the opposition and deny the Spartans any opportunities for an equalizer and took the match 1-0.

The Thunder improve to 3-3-1 following the victory. They will take the pitch again on Friday, Sept. 27 when they host Spalding University. Kick-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
