Women's Soccer Ends Frozen with Olivet, 1-1

OLIVET, Mich. -- The Trine University women's soccer team came back from a halftime deficit to pick up a draw against host Olivet College at one goal apiece.

The Comets took the lead behind the first goal of the contest in the 30th minute of play.

Despite three shots on goal from the Thunder one coming in the last ten minutes of the half, the goal was the lone one of the period and Olivet entered the intermission with the 1-0 lead.

Trine wasted no time in the second coming away with the equalizer in just the second minute of the period. Freshman Veronica Ocampo (Elkhart, Ind. / Elkhart Memorial) came up with the goal, her second of the season.

Neither team was able to crack the goal line in the rest of regulation and the two teams headed to extra time tied 1-1.

In the first overtime period, the Comets came up with two strong chances but freshman goalkeeper Carmen Sweigard (South Lyon, Mich. / South Lyon) came up with two saves to keep the game moving.

The Thunder had their own golden opportunity in the final seconds of the period when senior Morgan Sanderson (Leo, Ind. / Leo) took a penalty kick for the team, the shot went high and the teams remained tied as overtime expired.

Once again Sweigard came away with two saves in the second overtime period. She finished the contest with six saves after entering the game at the beginning of the second half.

The Thunder's best chance once again came from Morgan Sanderson but was turned aside by an Olivet defender.

Neither team would be able to score and the contest would end in the 1-1 draw.

Trine improves to 3-6-2 overall and 0-3-1 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) play. The team will return home for a game against Hope College on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 4 p.m.
