Women's Soccer Falls to Visiting Hope

ANGOLA, Ind. -- The Trine University women's soccer team ceded two first-half goals to visiting Hope College and was unable to mount a comeback attempt falling to the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) opponent by the score of 2-0.

The Flying Dutch picked up the first goal of the contest in the 18th minute of play on a perfectly placed shot from the top of the box.

The Thunder nearly responded just a few minutes later when junior Courtney Reece (Indianapolis, Ind. / Roncalli) got behind the defense and barely missed on a header attempt.

They added to their lead in the 32nd minute following a well-placed corner kick lead to the second goal of the game. Hope would take the 2-0 lead into the intermission.

In the second the Trine defense closed ranks keeping the Flying Dutch from scoring another goal. Freshman Carmen Sweigard (South Lyon, Mich. / South Lyon) came away with three saves in the period to help the effort.

To start the period the Thunder also put a barrage of shots on the opposition. Senior Morgan Sanderson placed both a header and shot on goal in the first 12 minutes of the second half, with Hope's keeper coming away with saves both times.

Trine drops to 3-7-2 overall and 0-4-1 in the MIAA following the loss. They will take the pitch again on Saturday, October 19 when they travel to face Calvin University. That match is set to start at 2:30 p.m.
