Women's Soccer Drops Double Overtime Thriller to Saint Francis

FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- The Trine University women's soccer team opened their season by traveling to face the University of Saint Francis. The two teams held each other scoreless throughout regulations and an overtime period before the Cougars came away with a game-winning goal in the second overtime.

Despite ultimately finishing on the wrong end of the scoreboard, the Thunder turned in a strong performance in the contest. The team matched the Cougars in total shots (13) while coming out ahead with ten shots on goal to the home team's nine.

Two Trine student-athletes finished the contest with three shots on goal, including sophomores Paige Schiebel (St. Charles, Minn. / St. Charles) and Grace Meara (St. Louis, Mo. / Lindbergh). Meara recorded the final shot on goal for the team in the waning moments of regulation, forcing the tenth and final save from the Cougars.

In goal sophomore Carmen Sweigard (South Lyon, Mich. / South Lyon) recorded eight saves in her three periods of scoreless play.

Trine will take the field again on Tuesday, Sept. 15 when they hit the road to face Grace Christian (Mich.) University. The contest is set to begin at 3:00 p.m.
