WATERTOWN, Wis. -- The Trine University women's soccer team scored early and scored often on their way to an 8-2 victory over Maranatha Baptist University. Junior Mia Schlueter (Fort Wayne, Ind. / Carrol) led the way for the Thunder with three goals.

The Thunder started the contest by scoring early, netting two goals in the first five minutes of play. The first came just ahead of the four-minute mark when sophomore Grace Meara (St. Louis, Mo. / Lindbergh) sent a pass to classmate Andrea Wright (Plainfield, Ind. / Plainfield) who finished off the play with the goal.

Just under a minute later Trine struck again. This time junior Schlueter came up with her first goal of the game unassisted. The Sabercats responded with a goal of their own in the 12th minute of the half to pull back within one at 2-1.

The Thunder responded with another two goals in under five minutes this time starting with a goal in the 18th minute of play. Schlueter set up this goal with sophomore Paige Scheibel (St. Charles, Minn. / St. Charles) coming away with what would end up being the game-winning goal.

The team pushed to a three-goal lead in the 21st minute with Wright scoring her second of the contest and senior Logan Sagstetter (Leo, Ind. / Leo) adding an assist. Just before the intermission, Maranatha Baptist tallied their final goal of the contest.

The second half started off slow with neither team scoring for the first twenty minutes of play. Over the final 25 minutes of play, the Thunder would score four goals to ice the contest for the 8-2 win.

Schlueter came up with two of those final four goals with fellow junior Riley Doll (Amherst, Ohio / Elyria Catholic) adding the final two of the contest.

In goal two members of the Thunder saw play, but neither faced much pressure. Junior Jessalyn Friederick (Indianapolis, Ind. / Bishop Chatard) played the first half allowing two goals but ending up with the win. Sophomore Carmen Sweigard (South Lyon, Mich. / South Lyon) finished off the contest.

With the win the Thunder improve to 3-1 overall. They will take the pitch again on Tuesday, Sept. 29 when they host Indiana Tech for a 4 p.m. contest.
