Ashbrook's Hat-Trick Leads Thunder to Victory

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Trine University women's soccer team picked up their first road victory of the season, improving to 2-0 overall following their 4-1 win over Spalding University. Freshman Teresa Ashbrook (Dewitt, Mich. / Dewitt) led the way offensively finishing the match with a hat-trick.

Both teams found early offensive success in the contest, each scoring a goal in the first six minutes. The home team came up with the first goal of the contest just over four minutes into the match.

A minute later Ashbrook knotted the game at one for the Thunder with her first goal of the day. The goal came after she beat the outside back to move in close to the goal putting into the bottom right side beyond the reach of the keeper.

Just nine more minutes of game time saw Ashbrook score her second giving the team their first lead of the day at 2-1. This time she worked here way through the heart of the Spalding defense and put the ball under the keeper's save attempt.

Both teams would tighten down the defense over the rest of the first half and the 2-1 lead would hold for the start of the second.

Ashbrook finished the hat-trick in the 54th minute of play when she came up with a steal in the offensive zone and beat the charging keeper to give herself a wide-open shot.

The 3-1 lead would last until the waning moments of the contest when the Thunder would be awarded a corner kick. Junior Veronica Ocampo (Elkhart, Ind. / Elkhart Memorial) started the play, placing the corner kick perfectly for classmate Andrea Wright (Plainfield, Ind. / Plainfield) who headed it home for her first goal of the season.

The Thunder will take continue their road trip tomorrow, Sunday, Sept. 5 when they faceoff with Hanover College. The contest is set to begin at 2:30 p.m.
