Women's Soccer Plays to Draw with Hanover

HANOVER, Ind. -- The Trine University women's soccer team struck first and held a lead for the majority of the contest, but a late regulation goal from Hanover College forced overtime where neither team would score and the game would end 2-2.

In a now common sight for this season freshman Teresa Ashbrook (Dewitt, Mich. / Dewitt) came up with the first goal of the game for the Thunder. The shot came in the 28th minute of play when she worked her way past the defense and scored a goal to the bottom left section of the net. The goal is Ashbrook's fifth of the season, she has scored at least one goal in each of the team's first three matches.

The Panthers responded in the 32nd minute with a goal of their own tying the contest at 1-1. The goal was scored after the opposition was awarded a penalty kick.

Four minutes later junior Veronica Ocampo (Elkhart, Ind. / Elkhart Memorial) fired a shot from just outside of the penalty area that landed home, once again to the lower left side of the net.

The 2-1 lead would hold for the next 52 minutes of play as the Trine defense weathered a storm of activitiy from Hanover. The Panthers outshot the Thunder 10-7 in the first half and 14-2 in the second half while also spending 60% of the contest with the ball, most in the offensive zone.

Trine's defense was stout, coming up with six blocks while junior Carmen Sweigard (South Lyon, Mich. / South Lyon) finished the contest with 11 saves.

The final goal of the contest came in the 89th minute of play when the Panthers finally broke through to tie the match at 2-2. Neither team would breakthrough again in either overtime period, but Hanover did record four more shots including three that required saves from Sweigard.

The Thunder return home from their two-day roadtrip with a 2-0-1 record. They will continue their season when they host Anderson (Ind.) University for a 4 p.m. match on Wednesday, Sept. 8.
