Belles No Match for Thunder Offense

ANGOLA, Ind. -- The Trine University women's soccer team opened the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) portion of their season with a convincing 4-0 victory over the visitors from Saint Mary's College.

The Thunder struck quickly in the contest coming up with their first goal in just the fourth minute of play. Junior Veronica Ocampo (Elkhart, Ind. / Elkhart Memorial) caused the turnover deep in the team's offensive zone before circling back and firing a shot from the edge of the penalty box into the top of the net over the outstretched hands of the Belles' keeper.

The team added their second goal in the waning moments of the half, when freshman Bell Mabry (Oregon, Ohio / Clay) received a pass from junior Andrea Wright (Plainfield, Ind. / Plainfield). Mabry would turn and fire a quick shot on goal that struck true and gave the team a 2-0 lead heading into intermission.

Trine would score again in the 86th minute of the contest. Sophomore Olivia Argentieri (East Amherst, N.Y. / Clarence) fired a shot on goal that the Saint Mary's keeper turned aside. The rebound went uncleared and junior Grace Meara (St. Louis, Mo. / Linbergh) fired an uncontested shot into the goal.

Meara would score a second goal in the waning seconds of the contest, after collecting a loose ball in the offensive zone and giving the team their final 4-0 lead.

Junior Carmen Sweigard (South Lyon, Mich. / South Lyon) had a relatively quiet night in goal, but came away with two second half saves to keep the Belles off the board and ended the game with a shutout.

The team improves to 10-0-1 overall, extending their win streak to eight tying a program record set by last season's squad. Trine will travel to face Olivet College on Saturday, Oct. 2 in their next contest. The match is set to start at noon.
