Shutout Victory for Trine Women's Soccer Marks Ninth Straight Win

OLIVET, Mich. – The Trine University women's soccer team defeated Olivet College 3-0 on Saturday to extend their winning streak to nine consecutive games, breaking the record for most wins in a row in program history.

The win also marks the second consecutive shutout for the Thunder, who now have seven on the season. Trine is still without a loss in 2021 at 11-0-1 and Olivet falters to 1-4-0. The Thunder are undefeated at 2-0 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) play, whilst the Comets are still in search of their first conference win at 0-2.

Trine was forcing the Olivet goalkeeper to make plays on the ball early, as three shots went towards the net in the first nine minutes of action. A shot by Andrea Wright [Plainfield, Ind. / Plainfield] hit the crossbar in the third minute and Blair Wright [Bridgeport, Mich. / Birch Run] and Bella Mabry [Oregon, Ohio / Clay] each put shots on goal.

Taylor Noll [Anna, Ohio / Anna] was able to score the opening goal at the 20-minute mark, when she fielded a free kick from Rachel Hill [Guilford, Ind. / East Central] in the box.

The Thunder goalkeeper Sophie Aschemeier [Findlay, Ohio / Liberty-Benton] was able to preserve the shutout with back-to-back saves in the 40th and 41st minutes.

After outshooting Olivet 8-4 in the first, Trine continued to pepper the net with an 11-2 difference in the second half. Veronica Ocampo [Elkhart, Ind. / Elkhart Memorial] received a header inside but went just high of the net in the 61st minute.

The Comets played with a man down after a player received a red card, and that gave Trine the opportunity to add insurance. It was Andrea Wright [Plainfield, Ind. / Plainfield] scoring with an assist from Mia Augustino [Niagara Falls, N.Y. / Niagara Falls] in the 75th minute, and senior Julia Surratt [Madison Heights, Mich. / Marion] from Paige Skaff [Plymouth, Mich. / Salem] in the 79th to make it 3-0.

Aschemeier completed the clean sheet with four total saves on the six Olivet shots taken.

It's a full week before the Thunder women take the pitch once again, that one will be a road match at Hope College on Saturday, October 9 at 12 pm.
