Women’s Soccer Breaks Program Record in 4-0 Win Over Adrian

ADRIAN, Mich. – The Trine University women's soccer team broke another program record on their way to a 4-0 victory over Adrian College.

The team's first goal of the contest made gave them the program record for most goals in a single season with 36, they ended the night with 39. The team also moves just outside of the program single-season point record standing currently at 99 (39g, 21a).

The Thunder struck early in the contest to break their record and to put the opposition on their heels. Sophomore Olivia Argentieri (East Amherst, N.Y. / Clarence) started the play when she brought the ball up the far sideline and deep into the penalty area. She then passed the ball back to a trailing Veronica Ocampo (Elkhart, Ind. / Elkhart Memorial) who fired a quick shot into the center of the net and past the diving Adrian goalkeeper, to give the team a 1-0 lead just over 11 minutes into the game.

Less than two minutes later the team would add to that lead. This time sophomore Lia Franzone (Lancaster, N.Y. / Lancaster) began the play firing a pass from the center of the field to a running Grace Meara (St. Louis, Mo. / Lindbergh) who wasted no time in placing a pass of her own perfectly into the goal area. The ball was picked up there by freshman Teresa Ashbrook (Dewitt, Mich. / Dewitt) who had just split a pair of Bulldog defenders and fired her shot just before a third came in to tackle her. The ball trickled by the unsuspecting keeper into the right side of the net.

Again, just under two minutes later, the team made their lead 3-0. Junior Olivia Butterworth (Murray, Ky. / Murray) brought the ball into the penalty area before passing it to her right where Ashbrook carried it to the top of the goal area before passing it back. Butterworth then fired a shot on goal that was blocked by a defender, she recovered her own rebound and put the ball in the back of the net.

The team would hold the commanding lead through the rest of the first half taking the 3-0 score into the intermission.

They once again started the period hot adding another goal just six minutes into the half. Argentieri started off the play again, this time by muscling her way through a pair of Adrian defenders and somehow retaining possession of the ball as she sprinted into the penalty area. Behind the defense, she fired a pass to Ashbrook who once again split the defense and found the back of the net.

The goal was Ashbrook's 13th of the season adding to her already program record setting season. She now holds both the single season goal record and point record for team.

In goal freshman Sophie Aschemeier (Findlay, Ohio / Liberty-Benton) finished the game with five saves for her third shutout of the season.

The Thunder improve to 12-1-1 overall and 3-1 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) play. They will take the pitch again on Saturday, Oct. 16 when they host Calvin University for a 7 p.m. contest set to be played on Shive Field inside of Zollner Stadium.
