Bishops Outpace Women's Soccer Despite Strong Second Half

DELAWARE, Ohio – The Trine University women's soccer team allowed a goal in each period and their match against Ohio Wesleyan University by the score of 2-0.

The Bishops began pressuring the Thunder in the early minutes of the contest. They recorded three shots on goal in the first five minutes, but sophomore Sophie Aschemeier was up to the task turning aside each attempt. Not to be outdone the defense also came up with a block on a fourth shot that went toward the net.

The barrage continued through the majority of the first half, but in the 31st minute of the game Trine applied some pressure of their own. Sophomore Teresa Ashbrook fired off the team's first shot which ended up being blocked out of bounds giving them a corner attempt. They would receive a second just a minute later, but neither was successful for the squad.

In the final five minutes of the half, Ohio Wesleyan finally cashed in on their pressure and pushed a goal by Aschemeier giving them a 1-0 lead at the intermission. The half saw the Bishops take 16 shots with eight going on goal. Aschemeier finished the period with seven saves.

The Thunder flipped the script coming out of the break, recording the first four shots of the second half. Freshman Abby Robison fired off the first and forced action from the opposition's keeper for the first time. The team followed it up with three more attempts over the next five minutes.

The rest of the half was a back-and-forth affair with both teams trading shots, but this time Trine placed more on goal. The final 45 minutes of the contest saw the team outshoot the opposition 13-10 overall and 6-3 on target.

Ashbrook in particular went on a tear finishing the game with a team-high five shots, three of which were on goal. In the 73rd minute of play she caught the opposing keeper out of position and put a strong shot toward the net, but a Bishop defender came up with the save to keep the lead.

Ohio Wesleyan iced the game in the final five minutes with a second goal and would send Trine home with the 2-0 loss.

The Thunder fall to 4-3 overall after the loss. They will continue their season when they host Denison University on Saturday, Sept. 24. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
