Thunder Secure 4-1 Victory Over Denison

GRANVILLE, Ohio – Another game of offensive success led the way to the Trine University women's soccer team's fourth win of the season, as they defeated their hosts from Denison University by the score of 4-1.

Once again sophomore Abby Robison led the attack for the Thunder, finishing the game with a goal and assist, her fifth multi-point game of the season. Between today's contest and the team's win against Anderson (Ind.) University on Wednesday, she finishes the week with eight points including three goals and two assists.

Her first point of the day came as an assist in the 17th minute. After the offensive possession started near midfield a pass ended up with Robison who battled her way to the far corner before working back toward the goal. While well defended, she sliced a pass behind a defender finding a wide-open Ashlyn Swartz in front of the net. The junior took a quick shot off her left foot scoring the opening goal on the left side of the net.

The Big Red responded to the goal just under a minute later, knotting the score at one.

The Thunder broke the tie 15 minutes later. Senior Olivia Argentieri held on to possession for the team near midfield, by playing the ball off a defender before battling through the defense to the corner of the penalty area. Her pass found Robison in front of the net who was seemingly covered well by a defender. The sophomore completed a spin move that got her around the defender and fooled the keeper completely giving her a wide-open net for the second goal of the day.

Trine added another goal before the end of the half. This time it was Madison Small who carried the ball up the near side of the field, stopping her run when she was even with the penalty area. Her crossing pass ended up in front of the net where the Denison keeper attempted to make a play on it. She lost her grip and the ball bounced into the air where senior Megan Davis was able to make a leaping header that ended in the back of the net.

Neither team scored for much of the rest of the game, but the Thunder added a final goal in the waning minutes of the contest. Abigail Marks took a corner attempt to set up that final goal, placing the ball outside of the keeper's area in some empty space. Hailey Jakubowski was in position to make a long-distance header attempt which caught the top of the net for the goal.

Despite the lopsided 4-1 score in favor of Trine, the Big Red had more shots in the contest. The final total was 12-6 overall in favor of the home side. Seven of those 12 shots were on goal and junior Sophie Aschemeier finished with six crucial saves to lead the defensive effort for the Thunder.

Trine improves to 4-2-4 overall following the victory. The team will continue their season by hosting Saint Mary's College on Tuesday, September 26. The Thunder's Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association opener is set to kickoff at 7:15 p.m. inside of Zollner Stadium.
