Gary Boughton enters his fifth season as Head Coach of the Women’s Soccer Team in 2023, fresh off leading the Thunder to the most successful season in program history in 2021.

In 2022, Trine held a record of 11-5-3 overall and earned a first round bye in the MIAA Tournament by finishing second in the conference standings with a record of 5-1-2. The Thunder secured four spots in the All-MIAA awards, with Teresa Ashbrook and Sophie Aschemeier on First Team and Olivia Butterworth and Olivia Argentieri on Second Team. Andrea Wright was the conference's recipient of the Senior Sportswoman of the Year Award. Both Ashbrook and Aschemeier were also USC All-Region student-athletes.

Boughton led a 2021 campaign that saw the Thunder win a program-best 15 games (15-5-2) en route to the first Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Championship appearance and first ever NCAA Tournament bid. The Thunder broke into the United Soccer Coaches Regional Rankings and remained there the entirety of the season.

In his first three seasons at Trine, Boughton has coached four All-MIAA and two All-Region selections. The team has also earned the United Soccer Coaches Team Ethics & Sportsmanship award in all three of his seasons at the helm.

In the classroom, Boughton’s teams have had an overall GPA of 3.5 or better in every semester since his tenure began.

Boughton came to Trine after serving as the head coach of SUNY Erie College in Buffalo, N.Y. for five seasons. While there, Boughton turned the program into a perennial regional and national power in Division III of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). From 2016-2019, the team reached the Regional Finals three times, winning two out of three and appearing in the National Championship Game in 2016; finishing the season as National Runners-Up. In 2018, Boughton’s team earned a #1 National Ranking for the first time in program history. He left Erie with an all-time program best career win percentage (.700).

Prior to taking over the Erie Women’s Program, Boughton was the Assistant Coach for the Erie Men’s program. In just the staff’s first season, they transformed a previously winless team into Regional Runners-up; the team’s record going from 0-16 to 16-3-1. After three consecutive winning seasons, Boughton was promoted to Associate Head Coach in 2013, before becoming Head Coach of the Women in 2014.

During his time in Buffalo, Boughton also served as head coach and general manager of Empire United in 2017-18. The team competed in the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL), the top-ranked amateur women’s soccer league in North America and is comprised of top women’s soccer players from around the country.

Boughton graduated from Medaille College with a degree in sports management in 2009. He played and started in 84 matches, captaining the AMCC powerhouse program in his Junior and Senior seasons. While playing he racked up NCAA DIII records in career assists (82) and career assists per game (.95) which he still holds to this day.

After graduation, Boughton continued his career playing for multiple professional teams over the past ten years.

Originally from Buffalo, NY, Boughton and his wife Amy reside in Angola.
