RICHMOND, IND. – The Trine women's tennis team came home with their first victory of the season, defeating Earlham College 8-1.
The Thunder started the day strong by sweeping the doubles matches. All three pairs defeated their opponents by the score of 8-3 in the matches. Senior Madison Hatkevich (Granger/Edwardsburg) and freshman Zoe Laubach (Niles, Mich./Edwardsberg) competed in the No. 1 match. Senior Kinnsey Pass (Lafayette/Jefferson) and freshman Andrea Jordan (New Haven/New Haven) won the No.2 match. Sophomore Kyra Braun (Portland/Jay County) and freshman Katie Simon (Paw Paw/Paw Paw) took home the No. 3 match.
Trine then finished of the dual match by only dropping one of the single matches. Hatkevich won the No. 1 match with scores of 6-3 and 6-1. Pass defeated in the No. 2 match and Braun in the No. 5 match both defeated their opponents in straight points (6-0, 6-0). Simon only dropped a single point in her No. 6 match winning by scores of 6-1 and 6-0.
In the most contested singles match, junior Theresa Magenheimer (Indianapolis/Hamilton Heights) needed tiebreaker points in the first set winning it 7-6 (9-7), before winning the second set in shorter order 6-4.
The team will look to build on the success today, on Thursday Sept. 14 when they travel to Mishawaka, Ind. to take on Bethel College.
