Trine Wins Thriller, 5-4

KISSIMMEE, FLA. -- The Trine women's tennis team defeated Covenant College by the score of 5-4 Tuesday night.

In the singles portion of the match, the Thunder came away with three victories. At the No. 4 and 5 matches, Trine came away with two sweeps. Sophomore Kyra Braun (Portland, Ind. / Jay County) came away with the victory 7-5, 6-4 while freshman Katie Simon (Paw Paw, Mich. / Paw Paw) won 6-1, 6-4.

The third singles victory came from senior Kinnsey Pass (Lafayette, Ind. / Jefferson) in the No. 3 match. Pass needed a tiebreaker set to come away with the win in the match which lasted three hours.

With the score 3-3, the teams moved on to doubles play. Trine fell behind when the No. 2 doubles pair came up short. But the team stormed back with wins in the other two matches. In the No. 1 match, senior Madison Hatkevich (Granger, Ind. / Edwardsburg) and freshman Zoe Laubach (Niles, Mich. / Edwardsburg) came away with the victory 8-3. In the No. 3 match, Braun and Simon came away with the 8-2 victory.

With the 5-4 victory, Trine improves to 5-3 on the season. They will continue their Florida schedule with a match against Oneonta State today, March 7, at 6:30 p.m.
