Women's Tennis Sweep Visiting Scots

ANGOLA, Ind. -- The Trine University women's tennis team started their season by picking up their first sweep since 2016, defeating visiting Alma College, 9-0.

A pair of newcomers dominated the No. 1 doubles match for the Thunder as the team of Ashley Spirrison (Fishers / Hamilton Southeastern) and Tatum Matthews (Midland, Mich. / Herbert Henry Dow) came away with the 8-0 victory. The No. 2 match was much closer needing an extra game to determine a winner, but Trine's team of junior Kyra Braun (Portland / Jay County) and sophomore Katie Simon (Paw Paw, Mich. / Paw Paw) came away with the victory 9-7. Sophomore Andrea Jordan (New Haven / New Haven) and freshman Camille Lozier (Elkhart / Concord) took No. 3 match for the team by the score of 8-6.

The top and the bottom of the lineup both came strong in the singles portion of the competition with Spirrison in the No. 1 match and Simon in the No. 6 match both picking up 6-0, 6-1 victories. Matthews took the No. 2 match for the Thunder with scores of 6-0, 6-3, while Braun came away with a win in the No. 4 match 6-1, 6-3. Lozier picked up the win in the No. 5 match with scores of 6-4, 6-0. Finally, in the only match of the day that needed a super tiebreaker, senior Theresa Magenheimer (Indianapolis / Hamilton Heights) picked up the final win for the Thunder with scores of 1-6, 6-4, 10-6.

The last time the Thunder swept a team came against Earlham College on Sept. 11, 2016. It is also the first opening match victory for the team since their 2015-16 season. The Thunder will look to continue their winning ways when they host Defiance College on Tuesday, Sept. 11 with first serve scheduled for 5:15 p.m.
