Thunder Sweep Yellow Jackets

ANGOLA, Ind. -- The Trine University women's tennis team took down Defiance College in their second straight sweep of the season.

Trine began the contest by taking all three doubles matches. In both the No. 1 and No. 2 match Trine came away with 8-2 victories, while the No. 3 team of sophomore Andrea Jordan (New Haven / New Haven) and freshman Camille Lozier (Elkhart / Concord) came away with the 8-0 victory. Freshmen Ashley Spirrison (Fishers / Hamilton Southeastern) and Tatum Matthews (Midland, Mich. / Herbert Henry Dow) competed at No. 1 for the Thunder while junior Kyra Braun (Portland / Jay County) and sophomore Katie Simon (Paw Paw, Mich. / Paw Paw) competed at No. 2.

In the singles portion of the competition, both Simon in the No. 6 match and Braun in the No. 4 match came away with straight-set victories. Spirrison picked up the victory in the No. 1 match with scores of 6-2, 6-1 and Matthews took the No. 2 match with scores of 7-5, 6-3. Lozier won the No. 5 match by 6-2, 6-0. In the final match of the evening, senior Theresa Magenheimer (Indianapolis / Hamilton Heights) need a super tiebreaker to finish off the sweep for the Thunder with scores of 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 10-2.

The victory propels Trine to a 2-0 record to begin the season. They will continue fall competition on Thursday, Sept. 13 when they travel to face Bethel (Ind.) in a 3 p.m. match.
