Thunder Defeat Visiting Cougars

ANGOLA, Ind. -- The Trine University women's tennis team defeated visiting Indiana University Kokomo by the score of 6-3.

The Cougars took the early lead winning both the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches to head into the singles portion up 2-1. The lone victory in the portion for the Thunder was in the No. 1 doubles match where freshmen Ashley Spirrison (Fishers / Hamilton Southeastern) and Tatum Matthews (Midland, Mich. / Herbert Henry Dow) took down the opposition 8-0.

Trine finished off the comeback by taking five of the singles matches for the 6-3 win. Spirrison finished off the contest without dropping a set by taking the No. 1 match 6-0, 6-0. Matthews was also undefeated with a 6-2, 6-1 victory in the No. 2 match. 

Senior Theresa Magenheimer (Indianapolis / Hamilton Heights) defeated her opponent in the No. 3 singles match with scores of 6-2, 6-3. Freshman Camille Lozier (Elkhart / Concord) won her No. 4 match with scores of 6-2, 6-2. In the final match of the evening, sophomore Brittany Alwine (Kendallville / East Noble) picked up a hard-fought victory in her debut with scores of 6-7 (7-5), 6-1, 10-4.

With the win, the Thunder improve to 3-1 on the season. They will next compete when select members travel to compete at the ITA Regional Championships which run from Friday, Sept. 21 through Sunday, Sept. 23. The championships are hosted by Kalamazoo College in Kalamazoo, Mich.
