Four Compete at ITA Regional Championship

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Four members of the Trine University women's tennis team competed at the 2018 ITA Women's Central Regional Championship tournament.

Representing the team in the singles side of the tournament were freshmen Ashley Spirrison (Fishers / Hamilton Southeastern) and Tatum Matthews (Midland, Mich. / Herbert Henry Dow). The two freshmen also competed as a team in the doubles portion of the tournament where they were joined by the team of junior Kyra Braun (Portland / Jay County) and sophomore Katie Simon (Paw Paw, Mich. / Paw Paw) in representing the Thunder.

Spirrison made quick work of her opening round singles opponent winning the match handily 6-2, 6-0. In her second match, the senior from Denison University ended Spirrison's tournament with scores of 3-6, 6-1, 10-4. Matthews also came up with an opening round victory with scores of 6-3, 6-4. But like her teammate, she lost in the second round with scores of 6-2, 6-3.

As a doubles team, the freshmen came up with another opening-round victory with a score of 8-5 but then dropped a match to a doubles pair from Case Western by the score of 8-3. The team of Simon and Braun ran into a tough team from Chicago and dropped their opening match 8-0. They followed up the loss by heading to the consolation bracket where the opposition needed a tiebreaker to defeat them 9-8.

The Thunder will finish off the fall portion of their season when they travel to face Grace College on Wednesday, Sept. 26. The match is set to begin at 4 p.m.
