Women’s Tennis Gets First MIAA Win over Adrian

ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University women's tennis team cut it close in a few matches but ultimately came away with a comfortable win over visiting Adrian College by the score of 7-2.

The Thunder took two doubles matches to start the dual match with a 2-1 lead. In the No. 1 match, the team of freshmen Ashley Spirrison (Fishers, Ind. / Hamilton Southeastern) and Tatum Matthews (Midland, Mich. / Herbert Henry Dow) came up with the 8-4 victory. The team of junior Kyra Braun (Portland, Ind. / Jay County) and sophomore Katie Simon (Paw Paw, Mich. / Paw Paw) needed a tiebreaker in the No. 3 match to pick up the other win for the Thunder, 8-7(7-1).

The team kept their foot on the gas in the singles portion of the contest coming up with five more wins to take the dual 7-2. Spirrison in the No. 1 match and Braun in the No. 3 match made short work of their opponents both winning with scores of 6-1, 6-1. Matthews took the No. 2 match with scores of 7-5, 6-1.

In perhaps the most lopsided contest of the event, freshman Ellie Cole (Albion, Ind. / Central Noble) picked up the No. 6 match with scores of 6-1, 6-0. While in the closest singles match, sophomore Delaney Keirn (Claypool, Ind. / Whitko) came up with the w7-5, 6-3 win in the No. 4 match.

The Thunder improve to 7-6 overall and 1-1 in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) following the victory. They will travel to face Olivet College in their next dual match of the season. The contest is set to begin at 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 7.
