Women's Tennis Tripped Up by Pilots

GRANGER, Ind. -- The Trine University women's tennis team traveled to face the Bethel (Ind.) University Pilots to start the 2019-20 season. In a contest played under new NAIA rules the Thunder came up short losing the event 5-2.

Trine dropped the doubles portion of the event, which was worth one point under the NAIA rules, by two matches to one. The lone victory for the Thunder came from the No. 1 doubles team of sophomores Ashley Spirrison (Fishers, Ind. / Hamilton Southeastern) and Ellie Cole (Albion, Ind. / Central Noble). The team defeated their opponents by the score of 6-1.

Spirrison would go on to pick up the team's first point of the match taking the No. 1 singles contest with scores of 6-2, 6-0. The other Thunder point came from junior Andrea Jordan (New Haven, Ind. / New Haven) who picked up a thrilling victory in the No. 6 singles match winning with scores of 2-6, 7-6 (12-10), 10-2.

Trine falls to 0-1 to start the season following the 2-5 loss. They will next travel to face Indiana University - Kokomo tomorrow, Friday, Sept. 6 with the match set to begin at 3 p.m.
