Women's Tennis Fall Maple Leafs 5-2

GOSHEN, Ind. -- The Trine University women's tennis team defeated their hosts from Goshen College by the score of 5-2 to start the season with a 1-0 record. Three members of the team finished the contest undefeated.

The teams played the contest under NAIA rules where the doubles portion of the contest is worth one point toward the final score.

The Thunder took that point by winning two of the three doubles matches in the contest. Seniors Ashley Spirrison (Fishers, Ind. / Hamilton Southeastern) and Ellie Cole (Albion, Ind. / Central Noble) took the No. 1 match 6-2. Then in the No. 3 match junior Eva Morales (Elkhart, Ind. / Elkhart Memorial) and freshman Lizzie Welker (Maumee, Ohio / Springfield Senior) came away with a 6-4 victory.

Three members of the team would finish the contest undefeated by winning their singles matches as well. Spirrison took the No. 1 match 6-0, 6-1 while Cole came away with a 6-3, 6-1 victory in the No. 5 match. Morales needed a third set to win the No. 4 match but did so with scores of 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.

Freshman Kennedy Outwater (Bronson, Mich. / Bronson) took the final point for the team by coming up with a marathon victory in the No. 6 match with scores of 6-7 (3-7), 6-3, 10-3.

The Thunder will return to the courts on Friday, Sept. 10 when they travel to face Indiana University Kokomo. That match is set to start at 4:30 p.m.
