Thunder Battle to Win Over Cougars

KOKOMO, Ind. -- The Trine University women's tennis team came up with a victory over their hosts from Indiana University Kokomo in an extremely tight match. The contest came down to the final pair of competitors, but the Thunder came up with the 4-3 victory.

Once again playing under NAIA rules, Trine took the point from the doubles portion of the contest by winning two of the three doubles matches. Their first victory cam in the No. 1 match where seniors Ashley Spirrison (Fishers, Ind. / Hamilton Southeastern) and Ellie Cole (Albion, Ind. / Central Noble) defeated their opponents 7-5. Junior Eva Morales (Elkhart, Ind. / Elkhart Memorail) and freshman Lizzie Welker (Maumee, Ohio / Springfield Senior) won a marathon match in the No. 3 doubles by the score of 7-6 (10-8).

Spirrison finished off her undefeated day with the most lopsided match of the night, taking the No. 1 singles match 6-1, 6-2. Junior Jayden Davis (Angola, Ind. / Angola) came up with the No. 2 match 7-5, 6-0 to give the team a 3-0 lead in the dual.

The Cougars would take the next three matches to tie the contest 3-3 with just the No. 6 singles match remaining. Freshman Kennedy Outwater (Bronson, Mich. / Bronson) represented the Thunder and came up with the decisive victory with scores of 6-2, 3-6, 7-5.

Trine improves to 2-0 following the victory. They will continue their season on Sunday, Sept. 12 when they travel to face Franklin College for a noon match.
