Women's Tennis Sweeps Franklin, Beats Webster 6-3

FRANKLIN, Ind. – The Trine University women's tennis team traveled to Franklin College and will return home with a pair of victories. After beginning the day with a lopsided 9-0 win over their hosts, they defeated Webster University in a closer 6-3 match.

Senior Eva Morales and sophomore Bekah Trent began the day with an easy 8-1 win in the No. 1 doubles match against the Grizzlies. Freshmen Emilee Bassett and Alexis Maloney would need more games but still came away with an 8-6 win in the No. 2 doubles match. Freshman Elina Locane and sophomore Lizzie Welker then finished off the portion of the contest with an 8-3 win in the No. 3 match.

The Thunder finished off the 9-0 sweep with six wins against Franklin during singles matches. Maloney posted the most lopsided score in the No. 5 match with a 6-0, 6-1 win, while Locane came needed just one more game to win the No. 3 match 6-2, 6-0. Morales won the No. 1 match 6-3, 6-1 and Trent won the No. 2 match 6-2, 6-3, before senior Bailey Pelliccia finished the day with a win by retirement in the No. 6 match.

Trine would take two of three doubles matches against the Gorloks in the second contest of the game. In the No. 2 match Bassett and Maloney won 8-2, while in the No. 3 match Locane and Welker won 8-4 to get the 2-1 lead.

Four more wins in the singles portion of the contest would give the team the 6-3 win. Trent needed a super tiebreaker but took the No. 2 match 6-1, 4-6, 10-8. The No. 3 match went to Locane with scores of 7-5, 6-1. Bassett and Maloney then won easily in the No. 4 and No. 5 matches each with scores of 6-0, 6-1.

Trine improves to 3-0 following the pair of victories. They will return to action when they travel to the Hope College Invite beginning next Friday, September 16.
