Women's Tennis Wins Marathon Match with Anderson

ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University women's tennis team and visiting Anderson (Ind.) University played a highly contested match where five of the nine matches played featured a tiebreaker of some kind. The Thunder eventually came out on top by the score of 6-3.

The very first match of the game would go to a super tiebreaker, when the No. 1 pair of freshmen Emille Bassett and Alexis Maloney would go to a tiebreaker but came up just short 7-8 (3-7). Freshman Elina Locane and sophomore Lizzie Welker would win a close match in the No. 2 match by the score of 8-6. Seniors Eva Morales and Bailey Pelliccia then won 8-2 in the No. 3 match.

Locane would finish the day undefeated after winning the No. 2 singles match 6-2, 6-3. The final four matches of the singles portion of the day would need super tiebreakers to decide a winner. Maloney came out on the wrong side of hers in the No. 4 match, but three other members of the team would win their matches.

Bassett won the longest match of the night in her No. 3 position with scores of 7-6 (8-6), 4-6, 10-4. Pelliccia then took the No. 5 match in comeback fashion, 1-6, 7-6 (7-3), 10-2 and sophomore Kennedy Outwater would win the No. 6 match 6-2, 4-6, 10-5.

Trine improves to 4-0 after the win. They will make a quick turnaround to host Indiana University-Kokomo tomorrow, Tuesday, Sept. 20 for a 4 p.m. start.
