Women's Tennis Opens Spring with Sweep

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Trine University women's tennis team opened the spring portion of their season with a convincing 9-0 victory over King's (Pa.) College. The match was played at the USTA National Campus in Orlando as a part of the team's spring break trip.

The Thunder opened the day with a pair of 8-2 wins in the doubles portion of the contest, before taking the third match by default. Competing for the team in No. 1 doubles were senior Eva Morales and freshman Elina Locane while freshman Alexis Maloney and sophomore Lizzie Welker defended the No. 2 match.

Morales faced the stiffest competition of the day in her No. 1 singles match where she needed a tiebreaker to come up with the win with scores of 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-7). Freshman Emilee Bassett in the No. 4 match and Maloney in the No. 5 match both recorded clean sweeps of their opponents, 6-0, 6-0.

Locane took the No. 2 match 6-3, 6-2 and senior Bailey Pelliccia took the final contested match with scores of 6-0, 6-1.

Trine improves to 4-1 overall following the victory. They will continue their trip down south when they face University of Northwestern (Minn.) tomorrow, Tuesday, March 7.
