TRINE TRACKSTERS FIRST AND THIRD AT INVITATIONAL

ANGOLA, Ind. - The Trine University indoor track and field teams started the 2012 season off right with an impressive fashion as they hosted the first Trine Invitational of the season. Trine’s men’s squad won the meet with 155 points while the women finished third with 74.5 points.

The Thunder finished 17 points ahead of Huntington University in the men’s division while Spring Arbor took the women’s side with 173 points.

The men’s team picked up seven wins, including a sweep of all three relays. The Thunder took home the 4x200m relay in a time of 1:34.7, the 4x400m in 3:30.84 and the 4000m distance medley in a time of 11:39.01. Junior Matt Burgess (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) took home the win in the 5000m with a time of 16:01.69. Trine took home the top two spots in the 400m as freshman Tyler Bourdo (Plainwell, Mich./Delton Kellogg) finished first with a time of 50.93 while junior Dan Linder (DeWitt, Mich./Grand Ledge) picked up second in a time of 52.94. Senior Kent Biller (Nappanee, Ind./Northwood) finished second in the 60m, finishing in a time of 7.32. Freshman Nate Grigsby (Royal Center, Ind.) also picked up second place honors with a time of 23.84 in the 200 meters.

In the field events, senior Andrew Stein (Lindenhurt, Ill./Lakes Community) won the triple jump with a leap of 12.44m. Junior Dustin Stutzman (Topeka, Ind./Westview)picked up the win in the shot put with a throw of 15.14m and finished second in the weight throw with a distance of 13.27m.

On the women’s side, junior Annalisa Krug (Battle Creek, Mich./Pennfield) turned in Trine’s top performance in with a second place finish in the 5000m with a time of 20:25.94. Fellow junior Abigail Samuels (Elkhard, Ind./Elkhart Central) finished third in the 800m with a time of 2:43.29. The Thunder finished third in the 4x200m relay and the 4x400m relays with times of 1:57.71 and 4:26.74 respectively.

Erika Rockwell (Coldwater, Mich./Coldwater), a freshman, turned in the top performance in the field events with a second place finish in the shot put with a throw of 11.79m. Fellow freshman Hanna Vollmer (Sherwood, Ohio/Fairview) finished third in the high jump, clearing a height of 1.42m. Sophomore Katie Finch (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine) placed fourth in the pole vault with a height of 2.75m. In the weight throw, junior Courtney Stahl (Lowell, Ind./Lowell Senior) finished fourth with a distance of 12.18m.

Trine will host their second invitational of the year on February 3 beginning at 4:00 p.m.
