Thunder Women See Success at Defiance Open

DEFIANCE, Ohio-- A first-place finish and several personal-bests highlighted the performance of the Trine women's track and field team in the Defiance Open.

Kelsey Ortiz (Swanton, Ohio/Anthony Wayne) won the 3000-meter run to notch the lone first-place finish of the night for the Thunder. Ortiz ran a new personal-best time of 10:56.72 to won the race by 10 seconds. Hannah Blystone (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) added a second-place finish in the event, while Kyla Binfet (West Yellowstone, Mont./West Yellowstone) placed third.

Freshman Jensyn Garrow (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold) turned in another well-rounded performance on the track. Garrow placed second in the 400-meter dash and 800-meter run. She added a 10th-place performance in the 200-meter dash.

Gigi Jarratt (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) added a pair of top-three finishes on the track. The sophomore placed second in the mile run with a time of 5:37.06. Jarratt also ran a time of 2:34.75 to place third in the 800-meter run. Both times were personal-bests.

Jenn Steyer (Fenton, Mich./Lake Fenton) continued her push for a potential bid to nationals with a personal-best performance in the weight throw. Steyer's throw of 53 feet, 3.5 inches placed second. That throw currently ranks 23rd in the nation, just outside the cutoff for the national meet.

Lydia Suchecki (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake) added a second-place finish in the high jump to highlight the team's performance elsewhere in field events.

The Defiance Open was Trine's final tune-up before hosting the 2016 MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championship. The inaugural indoor conference title meet will be held Saturday, Feb. 28 in Keith E. Busse/Steel Dynamics Athletic Recreation Center.
