Eck, Steyer Claim Top Spots in Hammer Throw

OLIVET, Mich.-- Kara Eck and Jenn Steyer took home the top two spots in the hammer throw to highlight the performance of the Trine women's track and field team on day one of MIAA Field Day.

Eck (Auburn, Ind. / DeKalb) won the conference championship in the event with a throw of 175 feet, 1 inch. Steyer (Fenton, Mich. / Lake Fenton) followed up with a second-place throw of 156 feet, 6 inches. The conference championship was Eck's second in a row in the event. The sophomore was ranked fourth in the nation in the event entering today's meet. Eck and Steyer have now finished first and second respectively in the event two years in a row at Field Day.

Lydia Suchecki (Spring Lake, Mich. / Spring Lake) notched a fourth-place finish in the high jump. The sophomore cleared a height of five feet to set a new personal-best. The jump was one inch shy of the school record.

Kelsey Ortiz (Swanton, Ohio / Anthony Wayne) paced the performances on the track with a sixth-place finish in the 10K. Ortiz set a new personal-record by nearly a minute with a time of 39:28.44.

Elsewhere on the track, Jensyn Garrow (Archbold, Ohio / Archbold) qualified for the championships of the 400-meter dash. The freshman ran the sixth-best preliminary time in the event. Garrow's time was clocked at 1:03.05.

Kaylie Lumbert (Dowling, Mich. / Hastings) added an eighth-place finish in the discus throw. The freshman set a new personal-best with a throw of 103 feet, 10 inches.

The performances leave Trine in third place after day one of MIAA Field Day. The conference championship meet concludes tomorrow.
