Thunder Women Place Sixth at Field Day

OLIVET, Mich.-- The Trine women's track and field team placed sixth in MIAA Field Day, which serves as the conference's outdoor championship.

Kara Eck (Auburn, Ind. / DeKalb) set a MIAA record to claim her second conference title in as many days. The sophomore threw a distance of 47 feet, 3.75 inches to win the shot put and narrowly break the old meet record. Eck's throw ranks as the second-best in the nation at the time of writing. She also ranks fourth in the nation in the hammer throw.

The performance followed up an Eck's first-place finish in the hammer throw yesterday. Jenn Steyer (Fenton, Mich. / Lake Fenton) placed second in the event to mark Trine's best performances at Field Day.

Jensyn Garrow (Archbold, Ohio / Archbold) placed sixth in the 400-meter dash to highlight the efforts of Thunder performers on the track today. Garrow ran a time of 1:02.44 after qualifying for the championship race yesterday.

Kelsey Ortiz (Swanton, Ohio / Anthony Wayne) added a seventh-place finish in the 5K with a time of 18:56.96. Freshman Lacie Piekarski (Spring Lake, Mich. / Spring Lake) finished just behind with an eighth-place finish in 19:01.37. Ortiz's performance came on the heels of a personal-best time to place sixth in last night's 10K race.

Other top-eight performances notched yesterday included Lydia Suchecki (Spring Lake, Mich. / Spring Lake) placing fourth in the high jump and Kaylie Lumbert (Dowling, Mich. / Hastings) placing eighth in the discus throw.

As a team, Thunder performers earned 48 points in the meet.
