ANGOLA, Ind. -- Multiple first-place finishes and a school record performance highlighted the efforts of the Trine women's track and field team in the season-opening Sean Brady Conditioner Saturday afternoon in Keith E. Busse/Steel Dynamics Athletic Recreation Center.
Freshman Hope Scholma (Montpelier, Ohio / Montpelier) set a new school-record in the preliminaries of the 60-meter dash. Running in the first race of her collegiate career, Scholma ran a time of 8.19 seconds to set the new program mark. Fellow freshman Kaylyn Forrest (Cassopolis, Mich. / Ross-Beatty) also topped the previous school record in the preliminaries.
Forrest would go on to narrowly edge Scholma for second-place in the finals with a time of 8.20 seconds. Scholma placed third with a time of 8.24 seconds in the finals. She added a fourth-place finish in the 400-meter run.
Continuing the success on the track were the performances of Jensyn Garrow (Archbold, Ohio / Archbold) and Jenna Gales (Mendon, Mich. / Mendon). Garrow and Gales took home the top two places in the 400-meter run, finishing in 1:00.56 and 1:00.95 respectively. Both performances were just one second off the school-record pace.
Gales went on to win the 200-meter dash in 27.57 seconds. Garrow also turned in a strong time of 27.91 seconds in the event.
Kara Eck (Auburn, Ind. / DeKalb) and Jenn Steyer (Fenton, Mich. / Lake Fenton) led Trine's performance in field events. Eck, a two-time All-American, collected first place finishes in the shot put and weight throw. Eck and Steyer dominated the field in the weight throw to take the top two spots. Eck's winning throw was 56 feet, 4 inches, while Steyer recorded a distance of 53 feet, 4.5 inches. No other performer topped 46 feet in the event.
Andrea Hagar (Goshen, Ind. / Fairfield) added a third-place tossin the shot put in her debut. The freshman recorded a distance of 35 feet, 7.75 inches.
Elsewhere on the track, Kelsey Ortiz (Swanton, Ohio / Anthony Wayne) and Lacie Piekarski (Spring Lake, Mich. / Spring Lake) each set personal-bests in the 3,000-meter run. Massie Jo Maskow and Ashlyn Maskow (Howe, Ind. / Lakeland) placed fourth and fifth respectively in the 60-meter hurdles in their debuts.

Trine returns to action Saturday, Dec. 10 when the Thunder compete in the Indiana Tech Invitational. Events are scheduled to begin at noon.
