Thunder Women Notch Three First-Place Finishes

ANGOLA, Ind. -- The Trine women's track and field team notched three first-place finishes in the Don and Riley Zimmer Indoor Classic, held Friday in Keith E. Busse / Steel Dynamics Athletic Recreation Center.

Kara Eck (Auburn, Ind. / DeKalb) won the weight throw and placed second in the shot put to lead the way. The junior's winning weight throw was measured at 16.79 meters (55 feet, 1 inch), while her shot put toss was 12.76 meters (41 feet, 10.5 inches). Eck is ranked sixth in the nation in the weight throw.

Jenn Steyer (Fenton, Mich. / Lake Fenton) added a second-place finish in the weight throw as the Thunder once again dominated the event. Steyer's throw was 15.81 meters (51 feet, 10.5 inches). Andrea Hagar (Goshen, Ind. / Fairfield) added a personal-record to place eighth in the shot put.

Elsewhere in field events, Hollee Kubiszak (Lawrence, Mich. / Paw Paw) set a new personal-best in the long jump.

Jenna Gales (Mendon, Mich. / Mendon) took first in the 400-meter dash, finishing just 0.2 seconds short of the school-record with a time of 59.67 seconds. Jensyn Garrow (Archbold, Ohio / Archbold) placed second with a time of 1:00.10. Gales' new career-best vaulted her national ranking up to No. 21 in the event.

The Thunder distance performers were led by Kelsey Ortiz's (Swanton, Ohio / Anthony Wayne) win in the 5000-meter run. Ortiz ran a time of 18:57.90, a personal-best indoor time. Lacie Piekarski (Spring Lake, Mich. / Spring Lake) placed second in 19:00.02, while Kyle Binfet (West Yellowstone, Mont. / West Yellowstone) rounded out the top three.

Hannah Blystone (Carmel, Ind. / Carmel) added a second-place finish in the Mile with a personal-record time of 5:26.71. The sophomore also placed fourth in the 800-meter run.

Trine's performance came in a field made up of scholarship performers from NAIA schools and unattached athletes.

The Thunder return to action Saturday, Feb. 4 at the IWU Midwest Classic. Events are slated to begin at 11 a.m.
