ANGOLA, IND. -- The Trine University women's track & field team resumed its 2017-18 schedule and took top honors at the Keith Turner Alumni Invitational hosted by Trine.
In the prelims of the 60-meter dash, sophomore Hope Scholma (Montpelier, Ohio/Montpelier) posted the top overall mark of 8.18 seconds to qualify for the finals and was six one-hundreths of a second from tying the Trine indoor all-time mark (8.12 seconds). In the finals, she fell a little behind her qualifying pace, but still finished second overall, crossing the finish line in a time of 8.22 seconds.
Sophomore Jenna Gales (Mendon, Mich./Mendon) placed first overall in the 600-meter run with a time of 1:41.32. Teammate Jensyn Garrow (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold) finished as runner-up after running a time of 1:42.11. The duo also finished back-to-back in teh 300-meter event with Gales taking her second event win of the day in a time of 42.98 seconds. Garrow was second at 44.34 seconds.
Other top performances included freshman Evonne Bultemeyer (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) who came in second place in the one-mile run, crossing the finish line in a time of 5:13.42. Fellow distance runner and freshman Elizabeth Lohman (Fort Wayne, Ind./Carroll) placed second in the 1000-meter run, finishing lest than two seconds behind the winner, at 3:25.17.
In the 3000-meter run, senior Kyla Binfet (West Yellowstone, Mont./West Yellowstone) placed in the top-three with a second-place effort and a time of 10:52.55.
Highlighting the field events for the women was a first-place showing by freshman Abigail Kuhlman (Napoleon, Ohio/Napoleon) who leaped a winning distance of 16' 3.00" (4.95 meters).
In addition, the women finished third and fourth in the shot put with freshman Jenny Flora (Greenfield, Ind./Greenfield Central) taking third with a throw of 35' 3.25" (10.75 meters) and sophomore Andrea Hagar (Goshen, Ind./Fairfield) finishing fourth in a distance of 35' 1.00" (10.69 meters).
Hagar also placed second in the weight throw with a toss of 44' 2.00" (13.46 meters) to garner eight team points.
Trine will next compete in the Mike Lints Alumni Open hosted by Grand Valley State University next Saturday, Jan. 27 in Allendale, Mich. The meet is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
