Women's T&F Places Second in First Outdoor Meet of Season

SPRINGFIELD, OHIO  --  The Trine University women's track and field team began the outdoor portion of the 2021 season at the Tiger Triangular hosted by Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio.

The Thunder finished second overall out of three teams with a team total of 118 points.  Ohio Wesleyan University finished as team champion with 130 points and host school Wittenberg was third at 73 points.

Individually, Trine captured several individual events, including two multi-event winners in freshman Haley Livingston (Forth Worth, Texas/Everman) and junior Valerie Obear (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern).  

Livingston won a total of four events, two on the track and two in field events, and also set two school outdoor records in the process.  Livingston set records in the 100-meter hurdles and the long jump.  In the 100m hurdles, Livingston posted a winning time of 15.86 seconds and in under the previous all-time mark by four one-hundreths of a second (15.90) which was held by Karen Johnson.  Then in the long jump, Livingston recorded a best attempt of 17' 10.25" to take top honors and improved upon the previous school record mark of 16' 11.25".  

Additionally, Livingston went on to record the overall best time in the 400-meter hurdles of 1:09.94 and then captured the triple jump with a leap of 33' 3.25."

Obear won two field events in the discus and the shot put.  In the discus, Obear posted a best throw of 135' 4.00" which was nearly 20 feet farther then her nearest opponent.  In the shot put, Obear had a winning toss of 40' 11.75" to finish a little over seven inches ahead of second place. 

Also finding the winner's circle was the duo of sophomore Madelyn Summers (Kendallville, Ind./East Noble) and freshman Kennedi Sternberg (Kouts, Ind./Kouts).  Summers posted a convincing win in the hammer throw, finishing over 11 feet ahead of her opponents with a mark of 138' 6.00" and Sternberg recorded her win on the track in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.67 seconds.

Trine is next scheduled to compete in the Olivet College Invitational on Friday, Apr. 2 in Olivet, Mich.
