Women's Track & Field Finishes Runner-Up at MIAA Championship

ALMA, Mich. -- The Trine University women's track and field team finished in second place at the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Outdoor Championship.

The Thunder finished with a team score of 178.50 while Hope College took home the championship with 234 points.

Trine started the day with two field event winners. Freshman Haley Livingston (Fort Worth, Texas/Everman) picked up a victory with a 10.61m effort in the triple jump and junior Valerie Obear (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) finished in first with a 41.47m throw in the discus event. The final athlete to earn team points in the field was junior Stephanie Hartpence (Elkhart, Ind./Concord) who finished fourth in the javelin throw with a toss of 29.29m.

While the team would not have an athlete win on the track they finished the day with a staggering four runners and two relay teams finishing second. 

Senior Evie Bultemeyer (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) accounted for two of those second-place finishes on her own. In the 1500m run, she would finish with a time of 4:33.62 and in the 800m, she came in with a 2:15.91 both second-place finishes. Also receiving points in the 1500m were junior Chloe Brittain (Breckenridge, Mich./Breckenridge) with a fifth-place finish (4:49.50) and sophomore Amira Faulkner (Bellbrook, Ohio/Bellbrook) with a seventh-place finish (4:50.65). In the 800m Brittain would finish sixth (2:25.78) and Faulkner would finish seventh (2:25.95).

The three distance runners would team up with Hartpence to compete in the 4x400m relay where they would give a second-place finish for the Thunder with a time of 4:12.83.

Freshman Kennedi Sternberg (Kouts, Ind./Kouts) would pick up another second-place finish for Trine in the 100m dash and a time of 12.88, she would also finish fifth in the 200m dash (26.84). Livingston would add the final individual second-place finish in the 100m hurdles with a time of 15.90.

The 4x100m relay saw Livingston, Sternberg, Hartpence and junior Paige McGonigal (Coventry Twp., Ohio/Coventry) joined forces to finish in second place with a time of 50.12.

Hartpence would tally her final points in the 400m dash with a sixth-place finish (1:04.98) while McGonigal would finish in eighth (1:05.45).

The final athlete to receive points for the team was Elizabeth Lohman (Fort Wayne, Ind./Caroll) who would come in third in the 3000m steeplechase where she turned in a time of 11:09.25.
