ANGOLA, Ind. -- Trine women's traithlon head coach Danny Powell recently appeared on Inside Indiana Business with Gerry Dick to discuss the university's addition of the sport.

The video can be viewed on the Inside Indiana Business website HERE.

Trine's women's triathlon team will begin competing in fall of 2017. The team will compete in the Central Division of the NCAA. As an Emerging Sport for Women, triathlon is in the process of becoming a full-fledged NCAA Championship sport. To become a NCAA Championship sport, 40 collegiate institutions must sponsor the sport.

Trine will be one of 14 women's triathlon programs in the nation, and the only such program in the state of Indiana.

Powell, Ed.D., a veteran of more than 50 triathlon races of various distances, was named the team's first head coach. Powell has competed in sprint, Olympic, half-ironman and ironman races, including Ironman Louisville (Kentucky), Ironman North Carolina and Ironman Lake Placid (New York). He also serves as professor in Trine University's Ketner School of Business.

Women's triathlon will join a large influx of new Trine athletic programs that will begin competition in fall 2017. The university has also added men's and women's Division III ice hockey, men's ACHA Division II ice hockey, men's and women's club bowling teams and an esports program.
