Powell Receives Coach of the Year Honors

ANGOLA, Ind. – Trine University women's triathlon head coach Danny Powell has been recognized as one of the top coaches in the sport receiving a pair of honors after the team's national championship this past fall.

The team won its first national title on Saturday, Nov. 13, at the Women's Triathlon Collegiate National Championships in Tempe, Arizona and shortly after the College Triathlon coaches Association (CTCA) named him Division III Coach of the Year.

Now it has been announced that Powell was nominated by USA Triathlon, the National Governing Body for triathlon, for the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC) 2021 Coach of the Year distinguishing him as the USA Triathlon College Coach of the Year.

"I am extremely thankful to have been nominated and recognized by USA Triathlon, especially because of the caliber of many of our collegiate coaches, some of whom are coaching Olympic Champions," said Powell, "All I can say is that the women of the Trine University Triathlon team have a talent for making everyone around them better and I am happy to be another beneficiary of that talent."

While he did not win the overall award, the nomination signifies a significant achievement as he joins an elite rank of coaches around the country. The goal of the USOPC Coach of the Year Program is to elevate the status of coaching as a profession and to identify leaders who make a significant difference in the lives of athletes, on and off the field of play.

The recognition is another in an increasing stack that the team has garnered since their national championship victory. In addition to the coach of the year, the team includes seven CTCA All-Americans and five Scholar All-Americans. In addition, the team was one of 31 to receive CTCA Scholar All-American status as a unit.
