Thunder Win Pair of Five-Set Thrillers

ANGOLA, IND.-- Trine needed the full five sets to earn a pair of exciting victories over Alma and Defiance in matches held Saturday at Hershey Hall.

Trine won the first two sets against Alma, but the Scots were able to rally back to force the deciding fifth set. The Thunder were able to put their foot down when they needed to in earning the 3-2 victory (25-16, 25-18, 20-25, 19-25, 15-6). Trine dropped the first two sets to Defiance, and had to come all the way back for their second five-set victory of the day (19-25, 15-25, 25-11, 25-16, 15-9). A balanced overall offensive attack helped Trine withstand the Alma rally.

Rabel led the attack with 18 kills and 15 digs, while Searles filled the stat sheet with 11 kills, 41 assists and 11 digs. Verkamp notched 10 kills and 11 digs, adding four service aces to become the sixth Thunder player in the Division III-era to surpass 100-career aces. She now has 107 in her Trine career.

Mikayla Carpenter's (Huntington, Ind./Huntington North) 18 digs and Erin Lewis' (Farmland, Ind./Winchester Community) season-high 11 digs were key in the Thunder defensive effort in the match. The Thunder followed the solid defensive effort by outhitting the Scots by a .293-.083 margin in the second set.
