Thunder Swept by No. 12 Hope

HOLLAND, Mich.-- The Trine volleyball team was defeated by no. 12 Hope in three sets, 25-17, 25-20 and 25-12, Wednesday night at DeVos Fieldhouse.

The Flying Dutch finished with 62 digs as they held the Thunder to a negative hitting percentage. Three players recorded 10 or more digs, led by Allie Mitchell with 18 digs. Vanessa Reynhout and Sarah Feldpaush paced the offensive effort with nine kills apiece. Trine was led by Mikayla Carpenter (Huntington, Ind./Huntington North), who notched a match-high 20 digs. The effort tied a season-high. Trine fell to 3-5 overall and 2-2 in the MIAA. Hope is now 5-2 overall, 3-1 in conference matches.

Taylor Rabel (Muncie, Ind./Muncie) led the Thunder attack with six kills. Rabel inched closer to the 1,000-career kill plateau, finishing tonight's action with 978 career kills. She added nine digs. Trine notched a season-high 10 blocks, led by Olivia Deck's (Lansing, Mich./Grand Ledge) seven block assists.

Laura Hazekamp added a double-double with 24 assists and 12 digs for the Dutch. Haley Muller added seven kills. Hope hit .198 on the night.

The ability of the Dutch to close out sets late was the story in the first two sets. Hope closed the first set on a 9-2 run after Trine had pulled within 16-15. The Dutch closed out the second set on a five-point run to break open a 20-all tie and go up 2-0.

The final set featured a 12-3 run by Hope to take control and push the lead to double-digits. The Flying Dutch hit .286 in the final set, their best effort of the night.

Trine returns to action Friday with a neutral site match against Ohio Northern at the Wittenberg Fall Classic in Springfield, Ohio. First serve is slated for 6 p.m.
