UNION, N.J.-- The Trine volleyball team picked up victories over Baruch and Frostburg State Saturday to finish off a 2-2 performance in the Kean Invitational.
The Thunder opened the day with a sweep of Baruch, 25-20, 25-15, 25-15. Trine followed that up with a 26-24, 18-25, 25-22, 26-24 victory over Frostburg State. Janaya Wilder's (Decatur, Ind./Bellmont) 21 kills paced the team's attack efforts on the day. Wilder added eight service aces. Megan Verkamp (Franklin, Ind./Franklin Community) continued her quick adjustment to the setter position, notching 71 assists (10.14 per set) between the two matches. Trine concludes its performance in the Kean Invitational with an overall record of 8-11.
Trine 3, Baruch 0
The Thunder hit a season-best .313 on the attack while holding the Bearcats to an .077 clip.
Shannon Scott (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg) tied her career-high with 10 kills while hitting an efficient .625. Morgan Harris (Crown Pointe, Ind./Merrillvile) also tied a career-high with nine kills on a blistering .727 hitting percentage. Wilder added nine kills as well.
The freshman trio of Scott, Wilder and Harris combined for 28 kills while committing just five attack errors.
Trine was dominant from the service line, notching 11 service aces. Wilder and Bridget Marlow (Trafalgar, Ind./Indian Creek) led the way with four aces apiece. Defensively, the Thunder did not surrender a single ace in the match.
Sydney Parks paced Baruch with six kills. The Bearcats fell to 7-15 on the season.
Trine 3, Frostburg State 1
The solid work at the service line continued for the Thunder in its second match of the day, and the team stepped up its performance on the block to secure the victory.
Trine notched 13 service aces, paced by Wilder and Mikayla Carpenter (Huntington, Ind./Huntington North) with four aces apiece. Carpenter also contributed to the defensive effort with a match-high 24 digs.
The Thunder notched 7.5 blocks as a team. Olivia Deck (Lansing, Mich./Grand Ledge) led the way with five block assists, while Scott added four block assists. Deck also contributed six kills to the offensive effort.
Taylor Rabel (Muncie, Ind./Muncie Central) paced the attack with 13 kills. Wilder added 12 kills.
Naya Cheatem notched 16 kills to pace FSU. Frostburg State fell to 10-10 on the year.
The matches concluded non-conference play for the Thunder. Trine opens the second half of MIAA play this Friday, Oct. 9 with a home match against Adrian at 6:30 p.m. in Hershey Hall.
