Thunder fall to no. 10 Hope in Four Sets

ANGOLA, Ind.-- Trine and Hope split the first two sets, but the 10th-ranked Flying Dutch rallied a 25-19, 23-25, 25-14, 25-12 victory Tuesday night in Hershey Hall.

Vanessa Reynhout, Sarah Feldpausch and Katie Rietberg each notched 11 kills to pace the Hope attack. The Dutch notched 10 service aces on the evening, with three of those coming from Mallory Luke. Janaya Wilder (Decatur, Ind./Bellmont) led the Thunder with 12 kills and hit .276. She added 13 digs for her fourth double-double of the season. Trine fell to 10-13 overall and 6-6 in the MIAA. Hope improved to 19-5 overall, 10-2 in conference matches.

Emma Bowman (Corvallis, Ore./St. Joseph) added six kills and four block assists for the Thunder. Mikayla Carpenter (Huntington, Ind./Huntington North) notched 18 digs to lead the team.

Courtney Van Houzen notched nine kills, while Haley Muller added eight kills for the Dutch. Hope hit .218 overall to Trine's .077 mark.

Trine made a six-point run to pull within 16-14 midway through the first set. Bowman and the Thunder block gave Hope problems during that stretch, as Bowman assisted on blocks three times. Hope had the answer though, scoring the next five points to regain control. Van Houzen and Reynhout each finished with four kills in the opening set for the Dutch.

A four-point run to open the second set sparked Trine to an early lead and the Thunder never trailed the rest of the way. Shannon Scott (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg) was key in the second set for Trine as she put away four kills. The Dutch closed to one late, but Wilder had the answer for set point and the two-point Trine victory.

Hope scored the first eight points of set three to take control of the match. The Dutch took over defensively over the final two sets to hold Trine to a hitting percentage below .000 in each set. Hope hit .440 in the final set to close out the victory.

Trine returns to action this Friday, Oct. 23 when the Thunder host Olivet at 6:30 p.m. in Hershey Hall.
