Volleyball Falls to Alma

ALMA, MICH. -- The Trine volleyball team traveled to Alma College where they fell to the Scots in three sets.

The team lost by scores of 25-20, 25-16 and 25-17.

In the first set, Alma battled out to an early 8-4 lead. The Thunder would battle back to within one of the Scots twice in the set but could never take the lead for themselves. In the late stages of the set, with Alma leading 23-15, freshman Sarah Toles (Kendallvile/East Noble) rotated into the serve and helped the Thunder rally off five straight points. The comeback would stop there, as Alma closed out the first set.

In the second set, the two teams traded points until they were tied at three. Alma would then win five straight points to build an 8-3 lead. The Thunder responded with strong front-line play, fighting back to a nine-all tie, utilizing three blocks for points along the way. The Scots responded with a timeout and then a six-point streak to build a 15-9 lead they would not relinquish.

Trine started the third set with a kill by junior Shannon Scott (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg) and an attack error by Alma to come out with a 2-0 lead. But the Scots swung back building a 4-2 lead that they would hold onto to win the match.

Toles and fellow freshman Madison Munger (Indianapolis/Franklin Central) led the team in the match with seven kills apiece. But Toles would also achieve match-leading marks in attack percentage with .500 and blocking assists with five. Junior Raven Hood (Monroe, Mich./Airport) led the team in assists.

Munger and freshman Emma Gaff (Hamilton/Hamilton) would finish the game tied for most digs on the team with 10 a piece.

The Thunder fall to 7-6 overall and 3-3 in the MIAA following the loss. They will look to bounce back when they travel to Kalamazoo College Wednesday, Sept. 27, for a 7:00 p.m. match.
